BEHIND THE SCENES

Last updated: September 2005

The DNA Files has brought together some of the most outstanding talent in public radio: producers, editors, researchers, scholars and others. Visit Who We Are to get a closer look at some of these people behind the vision ... from our esteemed host, John Hockenberry, to our executive director and fearless leader, Bari Scott.

The DNA Files is produced by SoundVision Productions®, a nonprofit public benefit corporation founded in 1995 to:

  • Bridge the gap between the public and experts in such fields as science and technology
  • Integrate social, ethical, and legal issues with highly technical concepts
  • Contribute to furthering a healthy democratic understanding of complex ideas

SoundVision accomplishes this mission by producing high-quality materials for broadcast, workplace training, and classroom and community use.

Current SoundVision Projects

We believe that information and education are tools that can lead to the empowerment of all people. In addition to producing The DNA Files (now in its third series), we are currently in development on several other projects to advance the public interest.

The Science Literacy Project

Intensive, six-day training workshops to provide public radio journalists with tools and knowledge to tackle complex science stories in a perceptive, clear, balanced and imaginative way:

  • The basic science that underlies cutting-edge research
  • The necessary tools for reporting on science and ethics issues
  • The protocols of science journalism
  • The techniques for presenting complex scientific content on radio

Science and the Search for Meaning in the 21st Century

With major funding from the National Science Foundation, this 10-part public radio series in development will explore the dynamic boundary between the sciences and the humanities. It will tackle the Really Big Questions about "Life, the Universe and Everything" (with apologies to the late Douglas Adams), through the lively and sometimes contentious voices of our foremost scholars and scientists. The programs and companion website will explore:

  • The Nature of Evil
  • The Human "Animal"
  • Ethics & the Environment
  • The Self
  • Sex & Love
  • Spirituality & Religious Experience
  • Emotion, the Mind & the Body
  • Aging & Death
  • Science & Reality
  • Progress, Complexity & Evolution
